This is one of the most beautiful and safest sea sides out of all Sri Lanka beaches in the South located about two kilometers from the city of Matara. It is a great place for a honeymoon or a vacation from your busy work schedule to relax and enjoy the best of nature.
Polhena is best known for its natural coral reef which makes it the safest for swimming. Until the reef the water level is only up to the waist. The sea is very shallow in the front and gets deeper very gradually making it safe and ideal for children and those who don’t know how to swim. It is also ideal for snorkeling and diving because of the natural coral reef where there are many colorful tropical fish and large turtles to be observed. There is lack of waves in the sea in this area and may not be so ideal for surfing but five hundred meters to the right of the seaside there is a surfing point which water sports enthusiasts may find useful. Polhena has a very entertaining and fun crowd where you see many locals enjoying themselves by swimming, playing, dancing and singing. There are local shops that rent out goofy inflation toys ideal for children and even some adults. Also there are many shops around that sell swim suits, snacks, water toys and goggles. There isn’t much shade in the sandy shores of Polhena, thus plenty of soft, golden sand for you to put a towel and get your tan on but if you plan to shade yourself better take a beach umbrella with you.
There are also public changing rooms and showers for your convenience and many guesthouses and restaurants around for an authentic seafood meal. In the middle of the sea right in the front there is a small island called the Crow Island which the locals identify as Galgodadiyana. You can reach it from a boat and is a beautiful, silent, calming place with its own sandy shores. Remember to also check out Totamuna which is the point where the beautiful Nilawela River which flows through the city falls directly to the sea.
Polhena is considered one of the best beaches south Sri Lanka because it is very peaceful and serene especially during the weekdays when the local crowd is less. It is about two hour drive from Colombo through the southern expressway and you can find luxurious accommodation at one of Matara hotels as Polhena is the closest seaside out of all other to the city. Staying in the city also means that you can travel to other tourist destination sites nearby such as Galle and Weligama.
Where beaches are concerned you will be spoilt for choice in Sri Lanka. No trip to the south of the country should be complete without a visit to Polhena as it holds a very special place in the beautiful authentic nature of this Island. So head over there and relax with a tropical cocktail watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean.
